Systems and Instantiations: The Architecture of Cosmic Meaning

At the heart of our approach lies the distinction between:

  • Systems — structured potentials composed of theoretical and symbolic constraints mapping what could be.

  • Instantiations — perspectival cuts that enact specific phenomena within these potentials.

Black holes are not fixed objects but instantiated enactments of the astrophysical system’s possibilities. Hawking radiation is a symbolically anticipated extension of that system, while the singularity marks a boundary condition within the system’s conceptual architecture.

Together, they illustrate the dynamic interplay of construal and reality, theory and observation, symbolic practice and cosmic imagination.


Constitutive Meaning and Reflexivity in Astrophysics

Meaning is not a passive reflection of an external cosmos; it is constituted through construal. The phenomena we label “black holes” or “Hawking radiation” exist only through the ongoing symbolic, discursive, and practical activities that produce and sustain them.

This reflexivity shapes not only what counts as scientific fact but how research priorities are formed, how instruments are designed, and how knowledge communities evolve.

From Collective Construal to Symbolic Cosmos: 35 A World Made Possible—Symbolic Reflexivity and the Constitution of Reality

We have arrived at a new horizon.

The journey from collective construal to symbolic cosmos has not merely mapped how meaning scales—it has revealed how worlds become possible through symbolic reflexivity itself.

This is not a metaphor. It is a claim about the nature of reality.


1. From Potential to Cosmos: The Reflexive Arc

At the outset, we traced how meaning arises through construal—how experience is not accessed directly but phased through systems of meaning.

From there, we scaled through:

  • Alignment: how construal synchronises across collectives

  • Phasing: how construal structures complex temporalities

  • Symbolic emergence: how construal gives rise to reflexive architectures

  • Cosmogenesis: how symbolic systems come to structure the conditions of possibility for all that follows

What began as a perspectival shift has become a world-structuring process.


2. The Symbolic Turn in Reality Itself

If construal is constitutive—not merely interpretive—then reflexive symbolic systems do not merely describe worlds. They instantiate the constraints and affordances through which experience becomes intelligible.

This is a turn not in language alone, but in ontology.

It is not that reality is symbolic, but that symbolic reflexivity is how reality is construed as reality—how matter, meaning, and potential take shape as a cosmos.


3. Toward a Reflexive Ontology of the Cosmos

We end, then, with a new proposition:

The cosmos is not a container of possibilities, but a system of symbolic alignment whose reflexive organisation constitutes possibility itself.

Such an ontology cannot be grounded in objectivity alone. It demands:

  • A shift from external description to internal construal

  • A shift from timeless truth to phased alignment

  • A shift from substance ontology to reflexive relationality

In this light, symbolic cosmos are not artefacts of culture. They are living architectures of reflexivity through which being itself becomes possible.


This is not the end of the path—only the opening of a more expansive horizon. From here, we may follow new trajectories: into the logic of categories, the architecture of symbolic time, the thresholds of phase transition, the reconfiguration of matter through meaning.

The cosmos, it turns out, was never inert.

It was waiting to be construed.


Epilogue: The Cut That Opens Worlds

Every series must end, but construal does not.

In tracing the arc from collective meaning-making to the symbolic structuring of possibility, we have not mapped a closed system, but enacted a cut—a reflexive shift that opens new space for thought, for practice, for being.

This is the paradox of symbolic reflexivity: it does not resolve reality into meaning; it reveals how meaning cleaves reality into form, into phase, into cosmos.

We end here not with a final word, but with a gesture toward what comes next:

From Collective Construal to Symbolic Cosmos: 1 When the Cosmos Becomes a Symbol

The cosmos has long been imagined as a container—an expansive space within which things exist, events occur, and meaning unfolds. But if we take seriously the proposition that construal is constitutive of meaning—and that meaning is not simply layered over the real, but intrinsic to what reality becomes—then we must also ask: what happens when the cosmos itself is caught in the reflexive loop of symbolic construal?

This series begins where the last one left off: with the collective as the site of phasal construal, where systems of value, coordination, and meaning align and shift through symbolic architectures. But now, we follow a deeper trajectory. If construal scales across individuals and collectives, it also scales across ontological strata. Meaning is not just socially constructed—it is ontologically constructive.

This is not a move from subjectivity to objectivity, nor from the local to the universal. It is a reflexive movement—where the very fabric of reality becomes responsive to how it construes itself. Symbolic systems do not merely represent the cosmos; they participate in its structuration. Every symbolic cut—every act of construal that recursively maps, aligns, or abstracts—reshapes the possibilities of world.

We are no longer dealing merely with a symbolic species or a symbolic society. We are entering a symbolic cosmos: a reality in which meaning is not an add-on to matter but a modality of its becoming.

Reflexive Matter: Relational Ontology and the Physics of Meaning: 34 Reality as Reflexive Alignment

If meaning is a system of construal, and matter is the condition through which construal differentiates itself, then what we call reality must be reframed as:

An ongoing alignment of symbolic cuts through reflexive matter.

From Objective Reality to Reflexive Realignment

Modern physics sought the objective, the invariant under transformation. But relational ontology reveals:

  • There is no view from nowhere.

  • There is no uncut world beneath perception.

  • There is only what persists through the alignment of construal — the coherence of cuts, recursively actualised.

This is not relativism. It is reflexivity: reality does not float in abstraction, but emerges within the structure of its own construal — always from somewhere, always across a cut.

Reality is not “what’s out there.”
Reality is the recursive coordination of what matters — across perspectives, through symbolic action, in and as relational systems.

Alignment Across Cuts

The symbolically-constituted world is not a solipsistic fiction. Its persistence lies in alignment:

  • The phases of meaning must resonate across systems.

  • The construals must mutually reinforce, resist collapse, open further potential.

  • Each cut constrains the next, shaping the trajectory of becoming.

This is why meaning systems (like language, science, myth) converge on stable worlds — not because those worlds preexist, but because:

Reality is the dynamic phase-consistency of symbolic construal across material cuts.

Alignment is not harmony. It includes rupture, resistance, asymmetry. But it is only through such recursive phasing that we come to know anything as real.

The Physics of Meaning

So what is the physics of meaning?

  • Not laws of motion, but systems of construal in reflexive matter.

  • Not equations describing the world, but symbolic cuts that hold — that phase, align, iterate.

  • Not timeless truths, but trajectories of semantic persistence.

And this is why relational ontology offers more than a new metaphysics. It offers:

We often take continuity for granted: a world that unfolds smoothly in space and time, with persistent objects, stable identities, and causal flows. But under relational ontology, this continuity is not given. It is constructed — or more precisely, it is co-construed.

No Continuity Without Cuts

In a system understood as pure potential, there is no continuity. There is only a vast possibility space, structured but uninstantiated. Continuity enters only through cuts — through actualisations that differentiate one construal from another.

But continuity is not a property of individual construals. It emerges from reflexive alignment across construals. A sequence of cuts forms a coherent phase not because time or space is continuous in itself, but because the phenomenal relations encoded in each cut cohere across instances.

Think of this as a kind of reflexive resonance: each construal partially presupposes, conditions, and completes others. Continuity is the result of a pattern holding across perspectival instantiations.

Coherence is Relational, Not Absolute

This coherence is not imposed by an external framework. It is not that we “live in spacetime” and things “move around” in it. Rather, spacetime itself is a reflexive effect of this ongoing coherence — a symbolic construal of the way meaning stabilises across a network of relational cuts.

This gives us a new way to understand apparent continuity:

  • It is not ontologically primitive, but emergent.

  • It is not objective, but intersubjectively patterned.

  • It is not static, but contingent on construal and sustained by alignment.

In this view, continuity is a phenomenal achievement — a structure of meaning, not of matter.

The Stability of the World as a Social Phase

Under this interpretation, even the apparent stability of objects over time is not a brute physical fact. It is a social-semiotic phase, maintained by recurring construals across actors, communities, and histories.

What persists is not the object, but the coherence of patterns that constrain how we cut the world. Stability, like continuity, is a function of collective construal.


This prepares us for a major ontological shift: seeing not just matter and meaning as reflexively co-constituted, but seeing identity itself as emergent from patterns of construal.

The term “observer” has long haunted the foundations of quantum theory. Does the observer collapse the wavefunction? Are they outside the system? Inside it? Is measurement a physical process, a mental one, or something else entirely?

From a relational ontological perspective, these questions dissolve. The observer is not an external agent, nor a metaphysical enigma. The observer is the cut that constitutes the event.

Construal, Not Consciousness

Crucially, this is not a claim about sentience or cognition. The observer is not “you” or “me” as biological organisms. It is the construal itself — the perspectival instantiation of potential into actual.

To observe is to instantiate a relation: to cut across a system of potential, thereby bringing forth a first-order phenomenon. That phenomenon has no independent reality outside the cut. It is not “revealed” by observation; it is constituted through it.

Reflexivity and the Collapse of Objectivity

What does this mean for objectivity? It does not deny the possibility of shared knowledge — but it redefines what is being shared. Objectivity is not access to an unconstrued world, but coordination across perspectives.

In this model:

  • There is no underlying reality independent of construal.

  • There is no phenomenon prior to observation.

  • There is no “observer-independent fact of the matter.”

Instead, reality is reflexive: the observer is part of what is being observed. The cut that individuates a phenomenon also positions the observer within it. All knowing is self-implicated.

Decoherence as Reflexive Alignment

This perspective allows us to reinterpret so-called decoherence — not as a transition from quantum to classical, but as the reflexive coordination of cuts. A stable, coherent “world” emerges not because the observer steps away, but because multiple construals align across systems. The classical world is not what’s left behind when we stop observing — it’s what is jointly sustained by patterns of mutual construal.


In short, the observer is not a problem to be solved. It is the constitutive gesture of meaning itself.

Reflexive Matter: Relational Ontology and the Physics of Meaning: 8 What Is Real? Meaning, Matter, and the Mirage of Objectivity

“Be realistic,” they say. “Face the facts.” But in a relational ontology, reality itself is not a brute given. It is not a stable background against which events unfold, nor an independent substrate awaiting perception. Rather, reality is a function of construal — a consequence of the cuts we make across fields of potential.

This does not mean “anything goes.” On the contrary: the constraints on what can be construed as real are systemic, patterned, and meaningful. But it does mean that objectivity, in the traditional sense — a detached view from nowhere — is no longer a viable metaphysical foundation.

The Mirage of the Given

Physics has long wrestled with the idea of the “real.” Quantum mechanics fractured the classical image of a world composed of independently existing particles with definite properties. Instead, we encounter a world where what is depends on how we interact with it — how we measure, describe, or configure it.

This has led to interpretive confusion. Some cling to hidden variables, trying to salvage a pre-construal reality. Others embrace observer-dependence but hesitate to call it real. But relational ontology offers a third way: to embrace the constitutive power of construal, not as a distortion of reality, but as its very condition.

The “mirage” is not the phenomena. The mirage is the idea that phenomena exist independently of meaning.

Matter, Meaning, and Mutual Actualisation

In the relational view, reality is not matter plus meaning. It is matter-as-meaning — a system of potential actualised in instance. When we say a particle exists, or a field propagates, or a clock ticks, what we are describing is a phase of a meaningful system. And when that system is actualised, it is not merely observed. It is instantiated in a particular construal — one that selects a cut through the phase space of possibility.

This is not idealism. It is not solipsism. It is relational realism: the recognition that being is not behind or beyond meaning, but emerges through its enactment. Reality is real — but only ever as phased.

What this allows us to do is hold onto scientific integrity — predictivity, coherence, explanatory power — while recognising that the world we model is never the world uncut. There is no “unconstrued” reality to which our theories asymptotically approach. Instead, every theory is a theory of the instance — a model of how potential might be cut.

The Cut Is the Real

When we speak of reality, then, we are not naming an object but a function. We are not asking “What exists?” in some ontologically prior sense. We are asking: What patterns of construal sustain a coherent phase of meaning? What systems of distinction and relation allow us to coordinate, predict, and experience?

In this view, a phenomenon is not real because it corresponds to an independent object. It is real because it is coherent within a phase-space of construal. This applies just as much to atoms and galaxies as to customs and currencies. The “material” world is not more real than the “social” or the “semiotic” — because all are cuts through structured potentials.

There is no neutral bedrock. No pure ontology. There is only the ongoing reflexive motion of matter and meaning co-instantiating reality.

Reflexive Matter: Relational Ontology and the Physics of Meaning: 5 Observers as Cuts in the Field

Physics, especially quantum theory, has long wrestled with the problem of the observer. Are they external to the system? Internal? Can observation alter outcomes? Does measurement collapse a wavefunction?

From a relational standpoint, these questions dissolve. The observer is not a passive eye nor a distinct agent. The observer is a cut — a perspectival enactment of coherence in a field of possibility.


From Agent to Articulation

In classical thought, the observer is an agent who perceives an objective world. Even in quantum mechanics, this persists — albeit paradoxically. The observer “measures,” and the system “collapses.” But who or what is doing the measuring? And where is the line between observer and system?

Relational ontology reframes the issue: there is no separate observer. There is only the perspectival articulation of the system — a cut in the field, a moment of semantic configuration.

To observe is to enact — to draw a distinction, to actualise a possibility, to integrate constraint.


A Cut Is Not a Subject

We must resist the temptation to anthropomorphise the cut. A cut is not a self. It is not a knower. It is not a perceiving mind.

It is a perspective instantiated — a semantic configuration of the field that delineates what counts as what, what relates to what, and how coherence is maintained.

The so-called “observer” is not observing a world. The observer is the enactment of a world — one among many possible articulations of the same systemic potential.


Reframing the Measurement Problem

In this light, the so-called measurement problem is a misdescription. There is no collapse, no sudden change from superposition to fact. There is only a relational shift: a new cut, a new configuration, a new construal of coherence.

Measurement is not an intervention. It is an instantiation of a perspective — one that constrains future possibilities while remaining consistent with the field.

This makes the observer neither causal nor magical. They are simply co-constitutive: a local articulation of a global potential.


Objectivity as Stability Across Cuts

If each observer is a cut, what becomes of objectivity?

It is not a property of the world, but a property of the system of cuts. Objectivity is stability across construals — the consistency of certain relational patterns across many enactments.

In this view, “what’s real” is not what exists independently of observers. It’s what persists through the shifting horizon of perspectives — what survives coordination.


Selfhood as Recurrent Construal

If observers are cuts, what is a person?

A person is not a singular observer but a system of cuts — a construal profile that maintains certain patterns of coherence across time and interaction. What we call “identity” is the recursive integration of cuts that construe themselves as continuous.

The self, then, is not a substance or essence. It is a relational rhythm — a patterned way of participating in meaning.


We Are the Field Articulating Itself

To observe is to articulate. To exist as an observer is to be a moment of coherence in a field of possibility.

We are not separate from the world we observe. We are cuts within it — perspectival nodes through which it becomes intelligible to itself.

This is not solipsism. It is not idealism. It is the recognition that intelligibility is not added to reality — it is what reality is.

Reflexive Matter: Relational Ontology and the Physics of Meaning

1 Matter as System

The metaphysical notion of matter has long haunted Western thought. From the atomism of Democritus to the substratum theories of early modern physics, matter has been treated as the ultimate "stuff" of the universe — the bedrock of reality upon which all else is built. In these accounts, matter is what remains when form, function, relation, and meaning are stripped away: a brute, inert, passive substrate, waiting to be shaped or set in motion.

But what if this image is not only misleading — what if it fundamentally misapprehends the nature of existence itself?

From the perspective of relational ontology, the notion of matter as substance gives way to something altogether more subtle and generative. Instead of conceiving matter as "that which is," we treat matter as that which may be actualised — a structured potential rather than a fixed base. Matter, in this view, is not a thing beneath or behind the world of appearance, but a system of possibilities whose instances are events. It is not the passive recipient of form, but the structured capacity to enter into patterns of construal.

This is a decisive shift: from substance ontology to system ontology. And it changes everything.


Matter without Substance

Traditional metaphysics treats matter as a substratum that underlies form. The dualism between form and matter — famously elaborated in Aristotle — has cast a long shadow. In contemporary physics, it lingers still in conceptions of spacetime as the backdrop of events, or in the tendency to posit particles as fundamental units whose relations are derivative.

But in a relational ontology, this hierarchy is inverted.

Rather than grounding relation in substance, we ground substance in relation. Matter is not prior to its organisation; it is its organisation — a system of construals, a set of structured affordances. To say that something is material is not to say it is made of some universal stuff, but that it actualises a particular cut in a system of potential — a cut that makes difference, that instantiates form, that brings a meaning-laden event into being.


Matter as Possibility-Structured

Within this framework, we can no longer speak of matter as that which exists independently of meaning. Every "material" phenomenon is already an instance of a system — a cut in a structured field of potential. Just as language construes meaning by actualising options in a semiotic system, so too do physical phenomena arise through the actualisation of systemic affordances.

This is not to collapse physics into semantics. Rather, it is to refuse the metaphysical distinction between a world of meaningless stuff and a world of meaningful patterns. If systems are inherently construed, and instantiations are perspectival actualisations of possibility, then matter is already relationally organised. It is not the opposite of meaning. It is its systemic counterpart.

Matter, then, is not the end-point of reduction. It is the point at which potential becomes situated in a particular relation — the point at which the world cuts itself.


Looking Ahead

This first post lays the conceptual foundation for what follows. We have reframed matter not as substance but as system — not as what lies beneath form, but as what gives rise to it through construal. This shift allows us to move beyond the metaphysics of substrate and into a truly relational understanding of physical phenomena.

2 The Cut into Event

In the previous post, we reframed matter as system — not as substance or substratum, but as a structured potential for actualisation. We proposed that matter is not the base of being, but a condition for emergence: a field of systemic affordances from which events may be cut.

But what is an event? And how does the world cut itself?

To answer this, we must dwell in the cut itself — not as a temporal happening, but as a perspectival shift: the move from theory to instance, from possibility to construal, from system to event. In a relational ontology, an event is not the occurrence of something in spacetime. It is a shift in perspective across levels of organisation — a point at which systemic potential is reflexively instantiated, yielding a phenomenon.

From System to Event

When we speak of a system, we speak of a theory of possibilities. A system is not a set of things, but a constellation of potential relations — a patterned space of affordances that can be differently construed. It has no spatiotemporal extension. It is not “there” in the world as an object. It is the possibility of a world — an architecture of what may become actual.

An event, by contrast, is what happens when a cut is made through this potential — when a particular configuration is actualised in a situated construal. This cut is not an operation on the system, but a shift within the system: a reflexive gesture by which one perspective enters into relation with another.

In this sense, an event is not a thing that happens in time. It brings time with it — it is the emergence of temporality as a relation between systems and their instances.

Instantiating the Physical

This shift allows us to rethink physical processes in radically non-substantialist terms.

Instead of imagining a universe composed of tiny particles in motion, we can conceive physical phenomena as events of construal — actualisations of systemic possibility that yield time, process, and change. A photon is not a "thing" that travels through space. It is a cut through a quantum field — an instance that brings a relation into focus. Similarly, mass is not a property of a particle, but an affordance within a system of dynamic potential: a perspectival cut that gives rise to inertia, momentum, and gravitational relation.

To instantiate a system physically is not to place it "into" the world. It is to construe the world in such a way that a new relational configuration becomes eventful. In this model, the world is not made of matter — it is always already making matter as it construes itself.

Reflexivity and Causality

The concept of instantiation as a perspectival cut also reconfigures our understanding of causality.

Traditional models of causation presume that causes precede effects in time, and that physical laws govern transitions from one state to another. But if events are construals of systemic potential, then causality is not a chain of happenings — it is a pattern of reflexive organisation across systems. An event does not cause another in linear sequence; rather, one instantiation constrains the space of affordance within which another may arise.

Causality becomes reflexive coherence across perspectival cuts. It is not about one thing pushing another. It is about the mutual structuring of actualisation across different levels of organisation.


Looking Ahead

We have now reframed the event as a perspectival shift — the moment when system becomes instance, and matter becomes eventful. This shift from possibility to construal reorients our understanding of time, causality, and the physical itself.

3 The Matter with Perspective

If matter has perspective, then the universe is not composed of meaningless stuff arranged into meaningful configurations by conscious minds. Rather, the universe is a cascade of reflexive construals: matter construes itself at every scale.

A supernova construes the relational tensions of its stellar interior. A fault line construes the accumulated stress of tectonic potential. These are not “meanings” in the human sense, but they are cuts from system to event — enactments of a structured potential that bring novelty into being. In this way, reflexivity is not added to the physical — it is the dynamic of the physical.

We might call this pre-semiotic reflexivity: the ability of matter to instantiate itself through patterned construals without invoking language, signification, or intentionality. This pre-semiotic reflexivity is the ground from which semiosis later emerges.

The Physics of Meaning

Once we allow matter to be reflexive, the boundary between physics and meaning begins to dissolve. This coherence is not uniform. Some systems phase rapidly — their construals tightly packed, quickly shifting — while others phase slowly, with long intervals between shifts in orientation. A glacier construes possibility across millennia; a thought may construe possibility in milliseconds. Both participate in time, but they instantiate different temporalities.

Hence, there is no universal time, only coordinated perspectives within systems. What synchronises them is not a common clock but a shared architecture of potential — a relational field within which construals can be aligned, nested, or phased with respect to one another.

Phase, Memory, and Anticipation

From this vantage, past and future are not points on a line, but orientations within a field of affordance. The “past” is the phase space already integrated into the system’s orientation; the “future” is the region of potential not yet enacted, but accessible from the current perspective.

Memory and anticipation, then, are not epistemic operations imposed on a temporal substrate. They are expressions of how a system orients within its own potentiality — how it threads construals together into patterns that afford continuity. This threading is temporality.

Thus, to remember is not to look back through time, but to reorient to previous construals as still-active perspectives. To anticipate is to navigate the architecture of potential, feeling toward possible cuts before they are made.

  • In the middle, proto-semiotic systems: they enact constraints on constraints (e.g., animal signalling systems), coordinating patterns but without a symbolic architecture.

  • At the other pole, semiotic systems proper: they construct and orient toward systems of symbolic potential, capable of treating any instantiation as an instance of meaning.

This evolution is not linear. It involves recursive layering: systems developing the capacity to treat their own distinctions as potentially significant, thereby opening a space of symbolic construals.

Consciousness Is Not Required

It is tempting to equate meaning with consciousness. But in this model, consciousness is a late and specialised form of semiotic reflexivity — a mode of symbolic orientation layered on prior systems of phase coupling and construal.

Meaning emerges not when something becomes aware, but when systems begin to participate in a symbolic potential: when their construals are positioned within a collective architecture of interpretability.

This is why meaning cannot be reduced to neural activation, nor to social behaviour. It is a relational phenomenon: a system-oriented-to-systems as symbolising.

A World Made Meaningful

Once such systems arise, the cosmos is no longer simply a site of physical causality or organic coordination. It becomes a semiotic ecology: a world of construed relations, orientable meanings, and symbolic affordances.
